ASCERTAINING THE REASONS OF FUTILE COOPERATION AMONG THE FARMERS IN THE RICE SUPPLY CHAIN IN BANGLADESH

Abstract

This study is an attempt to understand the reasons which are playing an active role to prevent
the widespread adaptation of cooperative societies in the rice supply chain in Bangladesh.
The purpose of this study is to figure out the problems from the farmers’ perspective and
address the dominant reason or reasons among them. Primary data was collected from 100
respondents and after analyzing with a t-test with a 99% confidence level of five prominent
factors, lack of government support in terms of raising awareness and lack of financial
stability among farmers are revealed to be the major actors. Preventative measures are needed
to further the beneficial sweeping effect of cooperatives and the government is expected to
step in immediately. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to specifically
identify the leading causes of the arrested development of cooperative societies in the rice
