Social Violations in the RMG Sector of Bangladesh

Abstract

The Ready-Made Garments (RMG) sector in Bangladesh, while crucial to the economy, continues to grapple with persistent social violations such as labor exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and gender-based discrimination. This paper systematically examines how these violations occur, particularly in supplier locations, and explores the underlying causes driving these issues. Through surveys and interviews conducted in Dhaka and Narayanganj RMG sectors, combined with a synthesis of previous research, this study provides a comprehensive analysis supported by categorized references. The findings emphasize the need for robust regulatory oversight, corporate accountability, and international cooperation to address these challenges. Moreover, the paper underscores the critical role of social sustainability in ensuring the long-term viability of the RMG sector. Actionable recommendations are provided to guide industry stakeholders toward fostering a more ethical and socially responsible industry.
